Chronicles of a Crazed Baker

We spent all last week prepping for a HUGE cake order. My (Meghan) sister was putting together a fundraiser for Paradise Dancers, a ballroom dancing group in Paradise. I agrees to donate my (our) time and talent for this event and Sarah and I made two very large sheet cakes and a three-tiered cake. At first, it seemed like a big job (but I'm doing this to help out my sis), then it seemed like a daunting job, then it seemed like an overwhelming job, and then it essentially felt like an insurmountable task! I made sure to document this crazy process so that you all could see the SHEER QUANTITY of cake and the beautiful outcome that made it all worth it! Here are some of the photos of our creative process...

Dancers cake topper made out of fondant. This was the first thing that I made for this cake project. Little did I realize then what a huge job lay before us!

Just a "small" batch of buttercream frosting... NOT! That made TWELVE batches and it still wasn't enough!
Sarah and I baked all of the cakes a day or two a head of time, because 1.) You cannot bake approximately 17 batches of cake in one day, and 2.) The cake needed to have time to cool. Here is our three-tiered cake just waitin' to be assembled!
The beginning of the end... (of my sanity) This photo does not accurately show scale, but just for reference... that cake is 16" x 16". It was a beast to bake, remove from the oven (with out getting 3rd degree burns!), fill, ice, lift, transport, etc. Basically everything about this cake was a pain in the @$$!!! And what's even better, is that after this one was finished we had a second one EXACTLY LIKE IT to do!
This was the state of the kitchen for approximately 3 days! (Many apologies to my roommates for the mess and many thanks for putting up with it, and me, for so long!) Every large bowl I had was filled with something. Every spatula and spoon I had was covered in cake, icing, or pudding. Not only was I baking and decorating for 3 days straight... I was scrounging for clean dishes and washing things left and right for 3 days!
THERE'S LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL!!! Sarah did a b-e-a-utiful job covering the tiered cake in fondant and I did the scroll work on top. After we had completed the top tier I added the topper and flower to get a visual for what it was going to look like. Looking pretty good...
END RESULT! ... And SSSOOOO worth it! We are EXTREMELY proud of how lovely this cake turned out! All of the blood, sweat, and tears definitely paid off! (Ok, there were no blood or tears, but a lot of sweat over lifting heavy cakes and worry about if they would turn out!)

Welcome to Sugar & Spice's blog! This blog is by two gals, Meghan & Sarah, who love to make (and eat) cake! This blog is ALL about our cakes. We started our cake decorating escapades in a Wilton method decorating class and have now started to bake and decorate cakes for hire. If there's a cake that you love or have a cake you want us to make, let us know! These are a few of the cakes we've made lately!
